The deadly truth about what fragrance really means
The scary fact is that to protect their ‘secret recipes’ perfume makers are allowed to withhold their list of ingredients from consumers.
The specific ingredients in synthetic fragrances are protected as ‘trade secrets’ and therefore the companies do not have to list the ingredients on the products.
These fragrances can contain: Parabens, phthalates and synthetic musks. These can cause hormone disruption, reproductive problems or even cancer.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) explains:
“When you see ‘fragrance’ on a personal care products label, read it as “hidden chemicals”.
A major loophole in FDA’s federal law lets manufacturers of products like shampoo, lotion and body wash include nearly any ingredient in their products under the name ‘fragrance’ without actually listing the chemical.
Companies that manufacture personal care products are required by law to list the ingredients they use, but fragrance and trade secret formulas are exempt.”
