Many people are put off by the idea of trying to live a more natural, less toxin filled life simply by the fact that they think it will be far too expensive.
As I’ve said before, when starting out you don’t need to throw everything out at once and replace it all straight away, this of course, would be expensive. The key to remember is that every product you eliminate or swap to a safer alternative is immediately reducing your toxic load.
Something people often forget is that there are some steps you can take, almost immediately that can fast track your home and body to a more natural state.

Here are my 13 budget ideas to cut the chemicals.
Get rid of any air freshener and candles.
It’s Ironic that something that is suppose to freshen our air is actually full of toxic chemicals that pollutes it! Artificial Fragrances contain Phthalates and these are serious hormone disruptors.
Instead, opt for opening the windows of if you really are keen on having a candle burning use one that you know is safe. I particularly love this one from Vanessa Megan.
Another option is a vaporiser with Essential Oils. This gives you the added bonus of each oils natural benefit as well as the option the change the scent whenever you feel like it. I like to burn a little lavender in the lead up to the kids bedtime to help the settle quicker.
Ditch Flame Retardants
Although added to items such as clothing and kids furniture with good intentions the chemicals used to make up a flame retardants are actually very toxic. They have even been linked to Neuro-developmental delays in school aged children.
Start Dry Brushing
Add this quick process to your daily routine and reap in the many benefits such as stimulating your lymphatic system and therefore helping it release toxins, stress relief and improving cellulite.
Make Your Own Products
Probably one of the quickest and most effective steps to take. The web is jam packed full of recipes to make your own natural household and beauty products. For some ideas check out these:

Get A Water Filter For Your Drinking Water
Tap water can contain Chlorine, Fluoride and even Pesticides. A simple countertop water filter from your local supermarket can get out the main nasties. I fill a glass bottle with the filtered water to keep in the fridge for chilled plus keep the water filter full sitting on the counter in the kitchen for room temperature water.
Buy In Bulk or Join A Co-op
Nuts, seeds, dried fruits etc can be expensive. Have a look into a Co-op near you to join.
Use Vitamin C In The Bath To Eliminate Chlorine
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) actually neutralises chlorine. Add a teaspoon to the bath water, wait a minute or two then jump in.
Cover Yourself In Coconut Oil
Unrefined coconut oil makes an excellent moisturiser, It can also act as a barrier to chlorine so can be good to use before swimming.
Grow Your Own Food
Not only can this be kind to the wallet but growing your own food means you can avoid all the nasty chemicals, processes and pesticides that go into the growing of supermarket fruit and veggies.
Get Outside More.
Get some fresh air! So simple but one of my favourites. It’s free, so easy and soooo good for you. Perhaps combine it with a bit of exercise and go for a walk or even a hike if feeling more ambitious. This can be great for helping to flush out the toxins, just make sure you drink plenty of water to help them on their way and keep you hydrated.
Get Some House Plants
Not only do plants have a positive effect on your mind but some of them also help clean the air of toxins. Ones to look out for include: Philodendron, Boston Fern, Peace Lily and English Ivy. Aim to have 2 plants per 100 Square feet.
Leave Shoes Outside
Again, another simple one but one that many people don’t do. Pesticides, lead, dust – your shoes bring in so much nasty “stuff” that this simple change is actually one of the most effective ones you can make.
Have you heard of Earthing? It’s all about connecting with nature (don’t panic, you don’t need to go all lala!) The simple task of just taking your shoes off and letting the naked soles of your feet come in contact with the Earth has incedible health and mind benefits. Just think about what you already do in your day and see if you can do it outside instead. For more info on Earthing check out my Full article What Is Earthing And Why Should You Be Doing It?
